"Two things I ask of you, Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

Commentary

The person writing this Proverb knew his own heart. He knew that under the pressure of wealth, he would break and start to trust in it instead of God. He knew that under the pressure of poverty, he would sin and become a thief. So, he asks God to give him on the basic provision that he needs – his daily bread, like how Jesus instructed us to pray.
