Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.

This is the “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” verse. Invest in 7 or 8 ventures, not in 1. If you have all your money tied up in one investment, then a disaster may wipe out that one investment. However, if you’re money is spread across many investments, a disaster that wipes one out won’t wipe them all out. In investing-speak, you should diversify.
